Apple just announced the new M6 Mac mini, and the most interesting part may be the value compared with Apple’s other machines.

I bought my M5 Pro MacBook Pro three months ago for $3,349. Today, that same configuration costs $3,949.

The new desktop options get interesting quickly:

  • M5 Pro Mac mini: about $3,299 with 48GB memory and 2TB storage

  • M6 Mac mini: about $2,299 with 32GB memory and 2TB storage

  • M5 Max Mac Studio: about $3,299 in the configuration I looked at

  • A fully upgraded Mac Studio can climb past $18,000

The M6 configuration sacrifices some CPU and GPU cores compared with the M5 Pro, but it costs roughly $1,000 less and gives you Apple’s newest chip.

For most prosumer users who primarily work at a desk, that M6 Mac mini looks like the sweet spot.

If I hadn’t bought my MacBook Pro three months ago, the M6 mini is the machine I’d be looking hardest at today.
