Hyperlink Table of Contents

Easy Navigation in Google Sheets

OVERVIEW

Well, hey there! It’s been a minute and we’re back. I have focused for a couple months on publishing a book (not sheets related, but it’s here if you’re curious).

It’s good to be back…

We all know about the tabs at the bottom of Google Sheets, right?

Well, not everyone does.

If you need to draw a bunch of attention to the different tabs without emailing back and forth, or if you just want to add some visual flair to your sheet, try this out…

Sidebar Table of Contents

We’re going to be utilizing hyperlinks to different parts of our spreadsheet for this to work.

In the same way we can link to a website, we can link to a tab or even a specific cell in our spreadsheet.

The shortcut for this is CTRL + K. Go ahead and click on a cell in a spreadsheet and press it. You can also right click the cell and select Insert link.

You’ll get a pop up box where you can type in whatever url address, named range or tab you want.

At the bottom you can also click through to select a sheet or named range.

Once you’ve done this, now you can click that cell and it’ll take you over to wherever you linked it.

Make it Look Good

You can get a table of contents effect with a little bit of styling. Create the same text in column A on every sheet you want the table of contents to appear.

Then, for each item, link it using the method above to the proper url, sheet or cell.

You can go a step further by changing the formatting of the title of whichever active sheet you’re on.

So, when I click Product, it goes to the Product sheet and that little tab is highlighted on the right sidebar.

This can be helpful if you’re sharing a sheet with someone who isn’t as advanced a user and could get lost in the tabs at the bottom (or not even know to click them).

Personally, I just like the added touch that it provides, too.

P.S. You can also change the color of the tabs at the bottom if you did want to highlight them.
